Death Valley is a designated Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park , offering some of the best stargazing in the country due to its extreme darkness and lack of light pollution.

The valley is the ancestral home of the tribe, who have inhabited the region for centuries. Its modern name originated during the 1849 Gold Rush when a group of pioneers became lost in the basin; despite the name, only one member of their party actually perished.
