The E 516 was developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s as a high-performance successor to the Fortschritt E 512 . While the E 512 was a breakthrough as the first GDR-developed combine, the E 516 aimed for a performance increase of up to 100%. Series production began in 1977 at the Bischofswerda/Singwitz plant.
