The story begins with a giant battle that ends in a freak accident, costing Puss his eighth life. When he awakens, a doctor informs him of his dire situation. Puss initially scoffs at the danger, but his confidence shatters during a chilling encounter at a local tavern. He meets a mysterious, whistling Wolf—the literal personification of Death—who easily bests him in a duel. Bleeding and broken, Puss flees, abandoning his boots and cape to hide in the house of a cat lady.
Puss steals the map first, reuniting with his former flame and rival, Kitty Softpaws. Together with Perrito, they journey into the Dark Forest, a shifting landscape that changes based on who holds the map.
