Max Thieriot’s departure was driven by his commitment to his other series, , where he serves as the lead actor, executive producer, and co-creator. Showrunners decided on a tragic end for Clay to authentically portray the "walking wounded" reality many veterans face upon returning home.
Having lost his leg earlier in the season, Clay has been finding new purpose at Ray’s veteran center. He receives a late-night call from Ben , a struggling veteran who is spiraling. Clay successfully talks Ben down from a suicide attempt and takes a firearm away from him. However, a security guard arrives on the scene, sees Clay holding the weapon, and mistakenly shoots him in the chest. Clay dies instantly, marking actor Max Thieriot's permanent exit from the show.
