Scholars compare sin to a "tear" in a garment; Tawbah (repentance) is the act of "sewing" or repairing that tear to restore the soul’s purity.

The Surah opens with an incident where the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) prohibited himself from something lawful—specifically honey—to please some of his wives.

To avoid causing further distress, the Prophet vowed never to drink the honey again. Allah immediately revealed the first verse: "O Prophet! Why do you forbid [for yourself] that which Allah has allowed to you, seeking to please your wives?" .
